What to Expect in Your First Pottery Class

So You Signed Up for a Pottery Class — Now What?

Taking your first pottery class is exciting, maybe a little nerve-wracking, and 100% worth it. Whether you're joining us for a Try-It Class or jumping into a multi-week wheel-throwing series, here's exactly what to expect when you walk through the doors at The Clayground in Jacksonville.

What to Wear

Clay is messy, that's part of the fun! Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Dark colors or old clothes are your best bet. We provide aprons, but clay has a way of finding its way everywhere. Leave your good jeans at home.

What Happens in Class

Your instructor will walk you through everything from scratch. No experience? No problem! our classes are designed specifically for beginners. You'll start by getting comfortable with the clay, learning how it feels, and then move into your first technique, whether that's hand-building or centering clay on the wheel.

Expect to make mistakes, and expect to laugh about them. Every wobbly bowl and lopsided cup is part of the learning process.

What You'll Make

In a Try-It Class, you'll create one or two small pieces during your session. In our multi-week series, you'll build on each skill week after week and end up with a collection of finished, fired pieces to take home.

What Happens to Your Pieces

After class, your pieces go through a drying and kiln-firing process. This takes time — typically 3 - 4 weeks — before they're ready for pickup. We'll let you know when they're done!
