5 Tips for Your First Pottery Class

5 Tips for Your First Pottery Class

So, you've signed up for your first pottery class: congratulations! Whether you're trying it on a whim or it's been on your bucket list for years, walking into a pottery studio for the first time can feel equal parts exciting and intimidating. At The Clayground in Jacksonville, we welcome beginners every week, and we want you to feel confident and ready from the moment you walk in.

Here are five tips that will help you get the most out of your first class.

1. Dress for the Mess (Seriously)

Clay is wonderful. Clay on your favorite white shirt, not so much. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty: think old jeans, a worn-in t-shirt, or anything you'd wear to garden or paint. We provide aprons, but clay has a way of finding itself everywhere. Closed-toe shoes are also a good idea since clay can find its way to the floor.

2. Leave Your Rings at Home

Clay and jewelry are not friends. Rings, bracelets, and even watches can get caked with clay and potentially get damaged. Save yourself the trouble and leave your jewelry at home or in your bag before you sit down at the wheel.

3. Let Go of Perfection

This is the most important tip of all. Your first bowl probably won't look like something from a gallery, and that's completely okay. Pottery is a skill that takes time to develop, and the magic of your first class is in the experience, not the outcome. The wobbles, the lopsided rims, the surprise collapses: these are part of the journey. Embrace them.

4. Listen to Your Instructor (and Ask Questions)

Our instructors at The Clayground have guided hundreds of beginners through their first time at the wheel. They know what to look for and can make small adjustments that make a huge difference. Don't be shy: if something isn't working or you're not sure what to do next, just ask. There are no silly questions in the studio.

5. Be Patient With the Process

Clay responds to pressure, speed, and water, and learning to manage all three at once takes practice. Some techniques will click right away; others might take a few sessions. The best thing you can do is stay curious and enjoy where the clay takes you.
